The Summer Bucket List that wasn’t: What we do instead

I know, kind of a weird title.

As the summer was slowly approaching and everyone was re-adjusting their schedules I sat and thought about our summer and how we usually spend it.

A lot of people want to be outside in the summer and I personally get grumpy when it’s hot. I mean, I don’t mind the heat but I need shade when the sun is intense. So the beach in the summer? No, that doesn’t sound like fun to me unless it’s at 10pm at night when we go grunion running. Speaking of, have you ever been grunion running? You totally should if you ever get the chance!

So I sat and wrote down what we typically do in this season of long days, and asked myself, “What is this season for?”

Summer is For…

  • Nighttime swimming

  • Cooking outside

  • Eating the garden bounty

  • Car rides with just 1 kid while being able to talk about important or totally random stuff

  • Playing in the sprinklers

  • Outdoor movie nights

  • S’mores just because

  • Lazer tag in the park

  • Keeping your kids up late to take them grunion running

  • Baseball (it’s year round around here)

  • Summer hair cuts

  • Hammock hangs with as many that will fit

  • Theatre show performances

  • Playing in the sprinklers or jumping in and out of the $1 blow up kiddie pool

  • Making homemade ice cream

  • Underwater photography

  • Catching the ice cream truck

So, it’s not so much about “How many things can we fit into our days" like the bucket list implies, it’s more about enjoying the season that we’re in for what it is. Whether you have a ton of things to do or nothing really big. No matter how ordinary, planned or unplanned it is, it’s all about enjoying the season that you’re in right now.

Enjoy each moment that you have together, because each breath, each moment, is such a precious gift. The next moment isn’t promised.

But this moment right now… is the best gift! And I’ll fill my bucket up with as much time together as possible.

Hope you have an amazing summer with your favorite people!
