As you know - breastfeeding can be both an amazing bonding experience and, at times, a bit of a challenge! That's where lactation consultants come in! These experts can be a total game-changer when it comes to guiding and supporting you through your breastfeeding journey. Today, I’m chatting with Ashley Shapiro, a Lactation Conslutant. Let’s dig in!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A MAMA (EXPECTING AND/OR POSTPARTUM) TO REACH OUT TO YOU?

I highly encourage mamas to reach out to me while they’re pregnant! I can’t recommend a prenatal appointment enough and they get to learn so much before the baby even arrives. I teach them about breastfeeding, what to expect, what’s normal/not normal, and when to call me for help. I love prenatals because it is so empowering for Moms to be prepared and advocate for their babies! The coolest part of the prenatal is we physically hand express so that mama can start harvesting colostrum for her baby!

A mom can reach out to me at any time postpartum but I love to check in during the first week to make sure mom and baby both feel supported on their feeding journey.

HOW DO YOU TAILOR YOUR SERVICES TO MEET THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF EACH CLIENT?

No two families are the same, and each baby is different; for this reason their consultation will be personalized to fulfill their specific needs and goals. Whether a mom has preconceived ideas related to breastfeeding, or a previous unpleasant feeding journey, I will work closely with them to help overcome those challenges and reach their desired feeding goals. My purpose is to create an overall positive feeding experience by creating a safe, comfortable, and nonjudgmental environment for moms and their infant.

WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR NEW MOMS TO HELP THEM SUCCEED IN BREASTFEEDING?

I highly recommend new moms to connect and meet with a local IBCLC, attend a breastfeeding class, or sign up for mommy and me support groups. Most PPO insurance plans cover 6 free lactation visits (virtual and in person) through the lactation network. There are also free online resources through La Leche League and Kelly mom!

HOW DO YOU APPROACH ISSUES LIKE LOW MILK SUPPLY, LATCHING DIFFICULTIES, OR PAINFUL BREASTFEEDING?

Each issue that arises is totally dependent on the individual. It’s important to look at the Mom’s feeding goals while also being mindful of protecting her mental health. We come up with a game plan that is specific to mom and baby, and is manageable for mom’s lifestyle, then follow up as needed. Breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt, if you’re experiencing painful breastfeeding, reach out to an IBCLC who can support you with achieving a better latch and help increase milk supply.

WHAT ARE SOME MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT BREASTFEEDING THAT YOU'D LIKE TO CLEAR UP?

  1. “It's always easy and natural.” While breastfeeding is a natural process, it can be challenging for many women. It may take time for both the mother and baby to learn how to breastfeed effectively.

  2. “It's always painful.” While some discomfort is common in the beginning as the mother's body adjusts, breastfeeding shouldn't be consistently painful. Pain can often indicate a latch issue that needs to be addressed.

  3. “You can't breastfeed if you have small breasts.” Breast size doesn't determine breastfeeding success. Breastfeeding is primarily about milk production, which is influenced by hormones and stimulation, not breast size.

I love that you meantioned being aware of mom’s mental health while also keeping her feeding goals in mind. I also am highly aware of how mama is doing in her mental space while going through labor and birth and then how she processes the whole experience postpartum. Having that support for all areas in life is so invaluable. I so appreciate that you offer this service!
