Belly Stories and Big Sister Cuddles – Southern California Maternity Photographer

Jen contacted me when she was already in her last month of pregnancy. She was going to forgo maternity pictures this time (2nd baby) and just focus on the newborn session but she started to feel guilty that she wouldn’t have pictures to look back on during her pregnancy with her son.

She said she wanted a simple and intimate session. One where she and her daughter could share some sweet moments together, before they welcomed little Jaxon. You can see his newborn session HERE.

Doesn’t she look stunning!? And at 37 weeks!! Gorgeous mama!

I thought that sounded perfect and we had just the place and time to make it happen.

As most 2 year olds would be, little Miss Toni was not interested in taking pictures with mama, but I love the moments we were able to capture!

I’m so glad Jen decided to contact me and it worked out that I was able to create these photographs for her. She will have these memories always!

In Home Newborn – Jaxon Cash (Southern California Newborn Photographer)

I recently realized I haven’t been sharing with you all the glowing newly weds, beautiful families, adorable children, gorgeous mamas or squishy babies that I’ve been able to document with my camera this year!

The first one I’d like to share with you is Mr. Jaxon Cash during his in home newborn session!

I got to photograph this adorable little girl when she was a newborn too. 🙂

I so enjoy photographing my clients in their homes. The family photographs just seem extra special to me. I’ve photographed families in the nursery, on the couch, in the backyard, on mom and dad’s bed or even on the staircase.

Most everyone has a favorite part of their home or an area that they always like to hang out and that is usually where we end up for the family photographs.

Of course this staircase with all the ship lap up the high walls was just asking to be part of the background 😉AlainaNunezPhotography.JaxonBlog-18

This is one of my favorites from his session. Little Jaxon so tiny in his daddy’s hands.

It’s always fun to hangout with the Slusser family and freeze these memories for them.

His nursery was the cutest! I love his mama’s style.

Holiday Harvest Boutique

Every year I try to host a boutique to help support local, home based businesses.

Don’t you get tired of ordering everything online? I know I do, I’d much rather go and see, touch, try or smell what I’m going to purchase, especially if it’s for a gift. But who has time to do that? Not many people right, especially if you’re a busy mama or just a busy person. So I put these boutiques together to support my fellow local small businesses but also because I like the convenience of a one stop shop with unique items that I can’t just get at Costco. 😉

There’s a few more unique things about this boutique.

AO Botanicals, LLC is hosting the event with me. You guys, her products are amazing! And Gervaise is just the sweetest friend. I can’t wait for you to meet her and experience her products!

Also… There’s going to be Harvest Themed Mini Sessions for the kids! Bring them in costume or just a cute outfit and get some fun pictures of them while you’re shopping. You can pre-register for that here: Harvest Mini Sessions. Just a tip, you’ll want to pre-register. 😉

If you’re interested in being a vendor and setting up a spot you can Contact Us. We are only taking a limited number of vendors to ensure we don’t have duplicate items. If you’re already booked that day but want to donate to the raffle and leave some business contact information please also Contact Us.

Remember, Save The Date for October 21st!

A Birth Story – Ezra (Long Beach Birth Photographer)

In celebration of Labor Day I thought it would be fun to reminisce about how I spent my labor day 3 years ago so I’m re-posting Ezra’s birth story.

“I met Ryan earlier this year when she was looking for a photographer to document the birth of her 2nd son. She was just so easy to talk to and I really hoped that she thought I would be a good fit to be in the room with her during her son’s birth. Fortunately after talking to her husband I was invited over to their home.

Since she was just at the beginning of her second trimester I told her I would come see her again around her 35th week so we could discuss any last minute details and so I could get a couple “before birth-day” photos.
Her husband Matt is in part time ministry and I love that he said his family is his first ministry and as God leads they will do more together. He keeps a blog at

Before I left I told her I had a feeling she was going to have her baby September 1st, which happened to be Labor Day this year. She said the 1st stuck in her mind too at the beginning of her pregnancy. (Fun little fact, this year I also guessed the birth of my friends daughter who I was suppose to photograph her birth as well)

Ryan text me on Monday, September 1st (yep Labor Day!) at 4:20pm and said she might be in labor but she would let me know if things progressed.

5:50pm came and I got another text from her saying yep it was definitely labor and she’d let me know when to come.

I text her at 7pm and asked if I could go then just in case she progressed quickly. About 20 minutes later she said that would be fine. I got there about 8pm.

I was one of the few honored people who got to witness this miracle! (at 11:22pm)

How awesome is that to be able to labor, birth and recover in your own bedroom and have your 2 year old asleep in his own bed in the next room. Just Perfect!

Little Ezra knew his daddy for sure. Matt started talking to him and Ezra turned to look at him right away.

Ryan made this little sling (she’s a birth doula herself at

Sue, the midwife of gave little Ezra his first check up.

Daddy finally getting a turn to snuggle his little one.

Grandma Lisa (Ryan’s mom) in love!

“For you formed my inward parts; you wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.” – Psalm 139:13 & 14

Congratulations Watson family!”

Happy 3rd birthday sweet Ezra!

Words from Ryan: “Alaina is such a joy to work with! She captured the home birth of our second son so beautifully. We absolutely treasure the photos! Birth is such an intimate process and Alaina worked quietly and was another calming presence on such a special day for us. <3″

A Moment in Our Life – Muddy Fun (Southern California Documentary Family Photographer)

After awhile I feel very uninspired when I’m only using my camera on my phone. So I make sure to pull out my regular camera because realistically, I’m not going to print pictures from my phone. I do add them to our school yearbook because I don’t always have my camera attached to my hip (believe it or not) and truth be told, sometimes I’d rather not have my phone so close by all the time either…

Kids are fun though! They make things happen and make the best out of their moments.

My oldest son Nathan really takes to heart that man was made from dust. Ever since he was a little one he just could NOT help himself whenever he saw a pile of dirt. He would roll, slide, climb, fall, stuff it in his pockets, I’m pretty sure he rubbed it in to his skin and clothes too. So when he plays in the mud, even at 10 years old, he goes all in. It’s so much his personality to do whatever he does wholeheartedly and that is one character trait that I just love about him. And of course being the older brother, his younger brothers are going to follow suit and join right in.

This day I had to grab my camera and start snapping away to truly capture my boys having an amazing time in the mud!

I didn’t get pictures of big sister having fun hosing them off… Usually that ends with some smiles turned upside down. But that didn’t seem to stop them from jumping in the mud a week later. I guess it’s worth it! 😉

Thanks for enjoying these fun childhood memories with me!

A Newborn Story – Annalise Mina (Southern California Newborn Photographer)

I love middle names. I always include my kids’ middle names whenever possible. I think the middle name is like the frosting on the cake, the guacamole with your chips, the raisins with my almonds… haha, what I’m trying to say is, it just completes the name. I know there are many who don’t have a middle name and maybe that’s because your first and last name are sufficient, like a brownie, it doesn’t need frosting because it’s awesome all on it’s own. I don’t know why I’m using food analogies but, I’m sure you get what I’m trying to say. 😉

Annalise Mina is the little blessing of my sweet friend Erin and her super supportive husband John and I was blessed with the privilege to document her tiny little features and them as a family within her first couple weeks after birth.

I asked Erin how she felt and what her first thoughts were after seeing her baby girl for the first time.

Relief and overwhelming joy. My whole life I was told carrying my own child would be difficult if not impossible. After losing our first baby to miscarriage I was convinced it was true. Yet God is good and we became pregnant again with an easy pregnancy. Still, my heart had a hard time trusting she would ever be in my arms. So holding her was a true moment of praise and overwhelming joy.”

Erin shared some words of wisdom for the expecting and new mama that I think is amazing advice.

Run to Jesus and don’t trust your hormones! Those first 6 weeks are hard. Trust your instincts, stand firm in the truth that God created you especially for your baby and let yourself take time to heal physically and learn to be a mom. Also, take all the help you can get. Help is a blessing not a sign of failure.”

Erin is a photographer who specializes in documentary photography. She loves documenting families and birth stories and she does a wonderful job at it. She happens to be my photographer who documented our Charlotte Skye’s birth story a couple years ago and we have been friends every since. 🙂

I asked Erin what inspired her to start her journey as a photography business owner.

“I fell in love with photography when my niece was born. I had the precious privilege of being asked to document it. I knew the moment I saw my nephew’s face as he held his baby sister for the first time that I wanted to provide others with images that reflected the art of their life. I adore finding the magic in the mundane of everyday life in my family documentary sessions and the grace in every new life placed in a mom’s arms.”

You can find Erin’s beautiful work at Captured Grace by Erin

“I’m so in love with our images. I love the mix between posed and lifestyle you captured. I love that you made art out of our little one. Also the pictures you made of us being parents and loving our daughter helped me through the dark days of postpartum depression. Having them to remind me of our love and role as parents was priceless.”

Thank you Sricharoon family for letting me take part in telling the story of your family and precious little Annalise! I truly enjoyed the time we had together and am looking forward to the next time we get to hang out. Apple picking season is coming! 😉

A Family Story – the McCoy’s (Orange County Family Photographer)

The McCoy family are one of those families that are very easy to be around. Their little Hannah and Colt are just the sweetest little ones and Scott and Michelle are mellow and easy going. They love to have family outings, exploring, camping, fishing, hiking, finding rocks… and their favorite times are when they’re all together. Here is a Slideshow that features some of behind the scenes into how their session unfolded.
Michelle shared with me that they hadn’t done a family photography session in 3 years and that was before they had their little Colt. She did say she had pictures taken when she was pregnant with him but that was the last time they had any professional photographs taken as a family.
Since it had been some time, I asked her what she thought about this session I documented for them.
“It was incredible…I love being outdoors. The setting was just what I would have wanted. The sun setting, the redwood trees, family… and you were so patient, and ran everything as naturally as possible making it a smooth session for us all.”
And what she loves the most about her husband…

“Family means everything to him. I feel loved by him. His love for his children. He wants the best for them, he just wants to protect them.”
“My kids are so full of joy. They love the simple things in life. During hard moments, they make me see the beauty in life…changing my perspective on the situation.”
She said their perfect day together would be…
Just being together, in the living room. We don’t need to be somewhere special, we just want to be with each other and we are having the best time. We enjoy going places too- but just playing with a ball in a room, all of us joining in and laughing at our silliness is our “perfect” day together 🙂
Michelle wants to remember, “My husband and kids laughter, hugs, and kisses. My kids cheeks, their smiles, their warmth, their voices, their smell, their small hands. Our stories, our adventures. Everything.”
I believe gleaning advice from mamas who have been there is one of the best types of wisdom you can receive when given in love, compassion and pure intentions. So I asked Michelle if she had any thoughts to share with other moms who might need an encouraging word.
“Don’t take any moment for granted. Live the moment. Breathe it in, soak it in. Take pictures. Write stories. Every moment is a gift from our Heavenly Father. Be grateful and enjoy your husband and your kids.”
“Thank you Alaina for a photography session that felt smooth and relaxed. You made sure that my 3 year old and 1 year old were as comfortable as possible. You created a fun and loving environment for them. My 1 year old felt so comfortable with you that he held your hand from our photography location, all the way to our car…that says A LOT. Apart from how the session went, we love the pictures! The pictures are beautiful especially because there’s no posing for my kids to be upset about and they are naturally happy just being with mommy and daddy. So their faces are as natural as any moment but with a camera perspectiveThank you for capturing simply sweet moments!”
It was totally my pleasure to capture these beautiful moments for your family. I hope to be able to do so again in the future!

DITL: A Day In The Life – in April (Southern California Documentary Family Photographer)

It’s Saturday… Four out of the five kids were up all night emptying their stomachs and my mom and I rotated through taking care of the kids. They each had their own bucket… it was ridiculous! But if we only have to loose one night of sleep and no one else gets sick tonight, all I have to say is, “Thank you Lord for being so gracious!” Because seriously, have we not all experienced the cycle of sickness? One gets it then a day or two later the next one gets it, then a day or two later the next one and so on until the nasty bug has made its rounds through each family member and now the one who first got it is starting to feel sick again…

With all that to say, our Saturday plans of baseball game, newborn session and crawling under the house to work on electrical have been put on hold. And I’m taking a little “me time” to drink my coffee and edit and prepare my DITL pictures for April.

Our mornings usually start pretty mellow. This is one thing that I so treasure. I love having quiet mornings even if we have a few morning people among us who still have volume control issues (that would be our number 4 who just turned 5 years old this month). By quiet I mean, not having to rush out the door. I have the hardest time getting out the door early. I always feel like I have a ton of time to prepare and get ready and then the next thing I know, we have to leave in 5 minutes and 1/2 the kids are barely dressed or can’t find socks and 20 minutes later we’re in the car.

I’m working on our schedule so we can be very intentional about “short meaningful lessons” so looking through the Forms to see how to plan our week. I think I almost have it!

Blake is my little sue-chef. It gets so sad when I don’t allow him to help prep and cook our meals. Something that my husband and I have always enjoyed doing on our own and together is cooking and baking. A little side note: I remember when I was younger and homeschooled, I would take a break after doing my math lesson (usually took about an hour) and bake something. Banana bread, coffee cake, muffins, cookies, etc.

So when we started having kids they were always in the kitchen with us. Learning how to crack eggs so as not to make a gross mess, stirring carefully so we don’t loose half the contents to the counter, not touching hot pans, measuring out the ingredients and most importantly listening because “good helpers are good listeners” ;). Sometimes I let them create their own recipes and we do a taste testing. They call it the “Kid’s Cook Off” like the show on food network. haha maybe one of my DITL’s will feature the Nunez Kids Cook Off.

This kids and I learned about grace. I had Kiera look it up in the dictionary, yes we did NOT google it. Good ol’ Webster’s Dictionary had this awesome definition for us. It was perfect time as there was some feuding and power of the wills going on.

My mom sitting out back, listening to podcasts or news while holding a sleeping Charlotte.

I set my camera down for a time while we did some schooling. As I look through our pictures it seems we’re always eating. haha

Last year we found out that our local Audubon  Society loans out nature kits. This year we borrowed the reptile and amphibian kit which includes some dvd’s. The kids seem to like amphibians better than reptiles. Snakes are just one of those things that kinda freak ya out.

I think this was after wresting or something because they look a bit sweaty.

When Papa (my dad) comes home it’s time for some baseball practice.

I was messing around with a slow shutter.

My little reader

my attempt at getting myself in a picture.

Kiera’s one of my photography students this year and one of the assignments was to build a pinhole camera and use film. She finished building the camera and was now trying to figure out how to load the film.

I didn’t get any nighttime photos. But I did get the next morning!

Breakfast out back, in the warm sunshine. Oh and a silhouette selfie. haha

I’ll update when I have another post for you to check out from a fellow momtog. 🙂

Featured Story: JD – Watch Me Grow (La Mirada Newborn Photographer)

Joy wanted a simple maternity session. She wasn’t really wanting to dress up like she had the last time and was feeling tired and more sore than before. If you’ve been pregnant while caring for a toddler you totally get just wanting to stay home and put your jammy pants back on and cuddle up with your little one.

She just wanted to make sure to have some pictures to document this moment, this pregnancy. I really don’t remember if it was her idea or mine but I know that we both thought it was a good idea to do an in home maternity session.

About 3 weeks later, their adorable James Dean, III was here!

“My first thought was, I have a son! I can’t believe he is here!”

I just LOVE the stretching face! Isn’t he so cute?! And his eye lashes are ridiculous!!!

“Alaina captures the sweetest candid, real life moments. Nothing is posed so the true essence of our family and children are portrayed in the pictures. It’s so amazing to see in print.”

I’m so glad JD is one of my Baby Club/Milestone Plan babies like his sissy was! Because… rolly thighs, squishy cheeks and dimpled knuckles are the best!

Our children need us just as much as we need them since we were all given specific strengths and weaknesses. I asked Joy what characteristics her children have that she loves, she said, “Jordyn has such a zest for life! She is so friendly and happy and JD is my sweet boy with my husbands energetic personality, it’s fun to see them develop.”

I asked Joy to share about her business with you.

“I have always been in the health and fitness industry , but since having kids my drive to be at home became stronger, Joyful Fitness allows me to train my clients on my own schedule and spend time with my children.”

I’ve been going to Joy’s morning boot camp since November and I’m back in my pre-pregnancy jeans  but even better than that (though that’s a pretty awesome thing!), I don’t feel so tired all of the time and I know it’s not because I’m getting more sleep. 😉

Make sure you check out Joyful Fitness on Instagram!
