Training to be a Doula {La Mirada Birth Photographer}

Yes, you heard that right. I’ve been going through some doula training and am so excited to be able to offer labor doula services as an add on to my birth photography packages!

I’ve been photographing births for the last 8 years and really felt like I needed to get some extra training and education to support the mamas that I get to know so well leading up to their birth. Becoming a doula just seemed like the next step to take and I’ve so enjoyed the training.

I jumped off the Instagram and Facebook train at the end of December and it has really been so lovely and freeing. During my training we were suppose to post something on our social media about going through this training and needing 3 families to work with to become certified, but I obviously couldn’t do that. I have 2 mamas that I will be supporting this month while they bring their precious babes into this world so I need 1 more mama to fulfill my certification needs.

I really love that I’m supporting AND documenting the whole process. I get to offer education and resources leading up to labor day and birth day as well. Don’t worry, I don’t just give you a hug and then disappear once you’ve brought that precious person into this world. No, I plan on coming back to check in and see where you need some help. Those first few days seem like a whirlwind with diapers, nursing, trying to eat and drink (that hunger while nursing is for real) and trying to adjust to your new sleep schedule and getting to know your baby.

Are you interested in doula support as well as birth photography? I would love to hear from you and we can talk though what your vision and hopes are for your pregnancy and birth experience.

You can get in touch with me HERE.

Blessings on your pregnancy!

Looking forward to meeting you and telling your beautiful story!

What Happened in 2020

The 2020 re-cap!

This morning while I was going through my morning routine I was thinking about, “What happened in 2020?” A lot! Is the quick simple answer but if you know me, the quick simple answers aren’t usually enough for me. I like to save those for people I don’t know well, you know the ones you see walking their dogs but don’t have much time to chat except in passing. Yep, those ones.

What happened in 2020.

What I find kind of find hilarious is, the last time we celebrated a new decade, the new millennium, everyone was racked with fear of the unknown. The would is going to live in darkness once the clock strikes midnight! Remember Y2K? What happened? Nothing… the clock changed and we kept living like it was a new year, because it was.

But then when we were anticipating 2020 everyone had these new hopes and dreams. 2020 is going to be the best year yet! Is the sentiment I kept hearing and seeing. 2020 did not disappoint in being memorable for sure.

I don’t want to make light of this… 2020 was a hard year for a lot of people, but… every year before was a hard year for a lot of people. I think I can say, 2020 gave us ALL a lot more empathy for those who have been struggling, those who don’t have support, those who feel isolated, those who feel lost, those who feel hungry, those who feel like the light of hope is fading.

There were a lot of gifts given, so much beauty among the ashes. Immediate families were given the gift of time together. Crazy schedules were cancelled and now siblings were able to build relationships! Parents had to work from home because offices were closed and now they get to see and BE part of home life! (I know not all home lives are good and my heart breaks for those who could not escape such abuse). Marriages thrived because spouses were working more as a team instead of as a tag team. Individuals and families realized the importance of becoming more self sustaining instead of constantly living as consumers. New skills were learned. New interests were peaked. The importance of taking care of our bodies and nutrition was a bigger focus and didn’t stop in January like all the other new year resolutions. Obviously I’m focusing on the positives, we all already know the negatives.

What I saw and think is amazing is, the sleeping giant was awoke.

That giant is… the praying believers who have been complacent until now. The parents whose eyes have been open to the truth. The broken hearts that have been mended by the only One who has the power to heal such deep wounds. The fighters who the Lord has called. The blanket of deception has become see through to those whose eyes have been healed.

Don’t you think it’s interesting that we celebrate Christmas at the darkest time of the year? The birth of Christ, the Savior, the Light of the World! My family and I do advent through the whole month of December, from the 1st to the 31st. It goes through the promises that were spoken of, that Jesus, the Son of God would come. The scriptures are VERY specific so that when He did come there would be no doubt that He is the One. Then the promise is fulfilled. And his life was in danger from the beginning, but it was not time for the sacrifice to be made. We continue reading through other miracles and even about stubbornness and redemption. The final readings are about the next promise, that Jesus will return. We know and have hope in this promise because of the evidence of that first promise being fulfilled. So there is HOPE. Hope in the darkest times, in the darkest nights.

(Side note, I dug deeper to see why Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December, I found there was a group of believers that have been noted they celebrated on December 25th and based off when Jesus was thought to be conceived. The evil one has been trying to dim that light of hope since the beginning because of his hate and anger.)

Don’t let the burdens of 2020 hold you down from welcoming in 2021. God’s mercies are new every morning. He gives us a hope and a future. We don’t know what the future holds but we know Who holds the future.

So hold on to that Hope friends! I’ve seen too many who have let go of hope. Take in each day as a blessing, a new opportunity. You have a purpose, you are loved and you are important. You wouldn’t be here if that were not true.

Blessings,

Alaina

Looking forward to meeting you and telling your beautiful story!

Why Maternity Photos? {Alaina Nunez – Orange County Birth Photographer}

I’m just going to be very straight forward and say, maternity photographs are a must. They really are.

Alainanunez.com-4-19-2020-29

How often in your life do you get to partake in cradling a new life, inside your womb?

It’s an amazing experience. For some it’s not so fun (I’m sorry!) for other’s it’s just a bit of discomfort but nothing to bat an eye at.

AlainaNunezPhotography.Julie.Maternity.2-1-18-22

Each mama and pregnancy is different. You could have had an AMAZING experience the first time and less than ideal experience the second… third… and so on. That means you have endurance and focus. No matter what is coming toward you in life, you keep your focus and move through it with grace.

Alainanunez.com-Padilla-Maternity.6-7-2020-29

Maybe everyone told you that you carry pregnancy well and look amazing but you had horrible ligament and back pain or those leg cramps like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. That means you’re one tough lady and you are up for this non-stop self sacrificing mama job.

AlainaNunezPhotography.Maternity2-12-17-1

Maybe you’ve experienced loss and this child is a gift that can never replace but can bring joy and beauty as you step out of those ashes.

AlainaNunezPhotography.1-15-17-1

Pregnancy is a gift! You are beautiful! You are a good mama!

Alainanunez.com-Padilla-Maternity.6-7-2020-6

Of course I’m going to advocate for professional photographs… But to have a photograph no matter the quality, is better than not having it.

AlainaNunezPhotography.Project52.Week5-6

I’ve told my mom and my grandma this before and now I’m going to tell you… The photographs, they really aren’t for you. That might sound wrong. I mean, I want all mamas to feel beautiful in their photographs when I take them. I want you to love the moments that are captured no matter how perfectly imperfect they are. But those photographs are a treasure for your children… for your grandchildren.

Alainanunez.com-4-19-2020-47

We can nitpick at all our flaws but our children look past those. They see beauty. They see strength. They see love. They see mama. They see you with all their little heart eyes.

AlainaNunezPhotography.9-16-17-maternity.2

Get those photographs of your children and for your children.

AlainaNunezPhotography.1-15-17-4

Also I’m just going to say… Your pregnant body is amazing! You are amazing mama! God created you for such a time as this.

alainanunez-1-8-2016-18

I love being able to photograph mamas, babies and families and being invited in to watch them all grow! Seriously, it is such a treat!

I’d love to chat with you about how you are hoping to have this fleeting time in your life documented! Fill out the form and I’ll get back to you soon!

Why Hire a Birth Photographer {La Mirada Birth Photographer}

I’m not here to convince you that you need to hire a birth photographer.

I’m just here to reaffirm that feeling you’re having. That is why you’re here isn’t it? Maybe just out of curiosity or it could be because you want moments of your baby’s birth to be preserved.

It could be, the feeling of knowing that these moments are few and far between.

That these moments are intimate.
These moments are cherished.
These moments are priceless.
These moments deserve to be preserved.
These moments are important.

When I am hired to document a birth story I’m not just there to capture the big push. I’m not there to photograph your lady parts (though those are pretty amazing!).

I’m there to capture the strength you didn’t know you had. I’m there to capture the birth team supporting and praying over you. I’m there to capture the amazing miracle that has grown inside of your body for the last 9 months and when you finally get to meet face to face. I’m there to capture the first breath, the first look, the first quivering lip, the tears of joy and the sigh of relief.

Alainanunez.com-BirthStory.OCBirth.WEB-27

That. is. birth.

The moment you hear your precious baby’s cry. The moment your husband can finally exhale knowing that his wife has finally finished the race. Have you seen the way he looks at you? He wants nothing more than to help ease your burden but knows it is not his pain or discomfort to carry, yet he still tries in the best way he knows how. It is at that time we allow God’s hand to move and our bodies to do what they are suppose to. The moment we say, “no more” He provides a way out.

AlainaNunez-BirthStories.Beau-11.WEB

I seriously am in awe of how God created our bodies.

How He blessed us to be able to care for a provide nutrients to our babies before we get to see their precious faces.

Just like other life experiences and journeys, we can come out of birth feeling a bit beat up, a bit overwhelmed, a bit exhausted and maybe some scars to show for it.

Remember when you were a kid and scars were cool? You’d count how many scars you had and announce the number like it was some kind of trophy, a right of passage and deserved some type of reward or at least some recognition. I’m here to tell you. Scars are still cool (do people still use that word, because I don’t think I’ll ever stop), they show where you have been and what you have done and remind you what you have learned along the way.

So…

I’m not here to tell you why you should hire a birth photographer. I’m telling you why I am a Birth Photographer.

I am a birth photographer because I think, feel, know that we all have a story to tell.

Everyone is created for a purpose by our Divine Creator.

We are all created in His image. We are all created to fulfill a purpose in this time. And I feel it is my duty, my honor, to be chosen to help document the journey; this part of your story.

So the question you should ask yourself. Why do you want this birth photographed? How important is having this birth story documented to you? That’s the more important question.

Motherhood Memories – La Mirada Motherhood Photographer

Last year I was asking mamas who were still nursing if they would like to be in front of my camera and have some memories documented of this time. AlainaNunezPhotography.Macrae.3-24-19-13

Macrae is a fellow photographer and homeschooling mama of three precious boys.

AlainaNunezPhotography.Macrae.3-24-19-7

At the time she was still nursing two of her boys which I think is amazing! I have been nursing for the past 14 years with minimal time off and within those years I have never tandem nursed. For you mamas that have and do… you’re amazing!

AlainaNunezPhotography.Macrae.3-24-19-23AlainaNunezPhotography.Macrae.3-24-19-6

There’s just something so special about the sweet connection a mama and her little one share during these nourishing and comforting times.

This moment right here… this encompasses the #boymom life exactly!

AlainaNunezPhotography.Macrae.3-24-19-74

Sorry dad, these sessions weren’t about you, but we know you play a big role so we squeezed in a few “all together” shots. I think we all appreciate a present, hands on dad.

Keep up the good work you two!

Lessons from 2019

Made it to day 365 of 2019!
My birthday is October 30th so ever since I was little I was always looking forward to my 30th birthday. I wasn’t wishing I was 30, but always knew I would get there… so when I turned 30 I wasn’t shocked and like, “oh my gosh! I can’t believe I’m 30!” Like I was seeing from so many others.
Now, when I turned 31 I felt a little thrown off like, “Well, I was prepared for 30, but 31 came out of no where!” I know it sounds silly but I think that is how a lot of things in life are. You prepare for the wedding but what about the marriage? You prepare for birth but what about the 4th trimester? You prepare for having a plethora of learning tools and creating just the right environment for free play but what about the tantrums and meltdowns or the hangries!?! Everyone talks about the terrible twos but what about the stubborn threes?
I think we tend to get tunnel vision on the short term goals so when we hit them we’re kind of floundering on what happens next…
I hope you don’t misunderstand me. Short term goals are great! And when you hit them it’s invigorating and a time that should be celebrated! But I do think we need to see what our long term is. What is the ultimate goal? Because the ultimate goal is what directs our daily path.
My ultimate goal is to love my husband and show my children Jesus (to love like Him, serve like Him and take the time to spend time refreshing my soul like Him). To pray for my clients and help them to see how blessed they are (immediately and years from now) by using my talents that God has given me to share. To raise awareness of amazing causes and document those who might otherwise go unnoticed.

I see much, I feel deeply and I am fully aware of the limited time I have, so I want to make the most of it.

AlainaNunezPhotography.2-1-19.Tucker-13

The lessons I learned walking through 2019?

I have to be truthful here… I was this close and I mean this ** close to just saying, “I’m done”. I was feeling pulled in too many directions. I was ready to close the doors on Alaina Nunez Photography once I was done with current obligations.

I was asking God to show me if this business should continue and if so what direction He wants it to go in.

I don’t want to give my leftovers… My children don’t deserve my leftovers, my clients don’t deserve my leftovers and my husband for sure doesn’t deserve my leftovers! I am not a perfectionist but I am definitely one who carries high expectations for myself.

This past year has been the slowest year I’ve had in a long time. Being an artist, I’m pretty accustom to the wave of clients that come throughout the year but after awhile it can be demotivating and super discouraging.

December came and I felt this renewed vision. I was asking God to show me if this business should continue and if so what direction He wants it to go in.

My kids and I have these great conversations one the couch at least once a week. I think I’m impacted by them more than they are but even if they just hold onto snippets of these moments I know the memories of these conversations will come to mind at the moments they will need them. We were talking recently about why it’s important to have respect for yourself. The main consensus was, “Because if you don’t, no one else will.” I said well… You can’t control what other people say and do but you can control what you say and do. So then I repeated my question, “Why is it important to have respect for yourself?” They couldn’t think of anything other than trying to reword their first answer. I told them, when God created you, He didn’t just speak and you were there like everything else He created. No, He took care to “weave” you together with your hair color, eye color, gender, skin color, character traits, strengths and weaknesses. You are created in the image of the Almighty. You are created to do mighty things even in your weaknesses. If you respect the Creator then you will have respect for the created and be in awe of it. You are created to do amazing and mighty things because the Almighty made you. If that doesn’t deserve respect, I don’t know what does.

So with that, I have an appreciation for the 2019 business blight. It was a good year of emotional and spiritual growth. Pouring into myself, my marriage, my family and the clients and students that I was pleased to be with.

My husband is my life partner and now will be my business partner. I’m pretty excited about that!

So 2020… I won’t be floundering when the clock strikes midnight or when I wake up tomorrow to celebrate “Nunez Day” with my family (I’ve told you about Nunez Day right?). I’m ready. I’m ready to see the sights and enjoy the company. And when I don’t know which turn to make… I know Who to ask for directions.

A Family Session – La Mirada Family Photographer

I’m very thankful for the people that I’m able to meet because of my profession.

I don’t just want you to have cute pictures, I want you to have a fun family outing. I want your kids to know that photo sessions aren’t scary, boring or no fun.

Alainanunez.com-HofflundFam2019-7

You can’t tell but it was during the fall heat wave here. Remember, we were getting 90 degree days just after we were getting use to some 70 degree weather?

Alainanunez.com-HofflundFam2019-8

This precious girl here is a sharp one, full of ideas and information.

Alainanunez.com-HofflundFam2019-9

One of my favorites from their session. Love when mama gets to be in the photos with their loves.

Alainanunez.com-HofflundFam2019-6

And of course I always make sure mom and dad get a few moments with just the two of them.

Alainanunez.com-HofflundFam2019-1

I’m a pretty easy going person and will allow the kids time to warm up to the fact that I’m going to be taking their picture and it’s ok. That’s when the weight of expectations is lifted and the real smiles come out.
